Trust and trustworthiness are the most important things a successful business needs to operate smoothly. Trust with coworkers, clients, and management is a foundational aspect of running a company. When trust is lost at any level, the consequences can be disastrous. Unfortunately, most of us have experienced varying levels of dishonesty in our careers. We at Lighthouse Therapy want to be a company that fosters trust with everyone we meet.
The video below is part of a conference Andy Stanley gave to lead pastors. Andy is the senior pastor of North Point Community Church in Georgia. He also founded North Point Ministries, which is a worldwide Christian organization. However, what he says can be applied to any leadership situation involving multiple people. This message is easily applied to business, both secular and nonsecular.
He makes several important points in his presentation. Primarily, people must trust and be trusted. Our experiences, ‘who I am’ and ‘what I see’, can make it difficult to trust others. When there is a gap between what is expected and what actually happens, we as humans have a choice to fill that gap with either trust or suspicion. If we have created this gap, it is our responsibility to address the issue immediately. Doing so demonstrates our trustworthiness.
In the corporate world, when problems arise, there is a choice to blame a person, human nature, or the present system. Trust also affects the culture within a company. By creating a culture of trust, accurate information is both given and received effectively. Even though problems are commonplace, when they are handled with trust, everyone benefits and integrity prevails.
Stanley expands on many of the points discussed here. The video is about 30 minutes, but it is definitely worth your time. Even if you are not Christian, the topics he discusses can still be applied corporately.
